Open the toolbar
- The annotation tools are on tablets and computers; on a phone the reader keeps to reading.
- Select Annotate in the bottom bar, or open Home, then Tools, then Annotation Tools.
- The tools open in a rail on the left of the page. When there is room beside the page, the rail stays there, clear of the Mushaf's border.
- When the page is zoomed in or the screen is narrow, the rail slides away and leaves a slim handle on the left edge. Rest the pointer on the handle, tap it, or press \ to bring the rail out over the page; it slides back once you move away or pick a tool. The pin keeps it out.
- The handle shows a dot in the colour of the tool you are using, so you always know a tool is on.
- Close toolbar (✕) closes the tools. Point at any button to see its name and shortcut.
Marking tools
- Read
- Drawing off. The page behaves normally, and tapping a word marks a mistake (see the guide).
- Text
- Click where the note should go and type. Press Ctrl+Enter to finish; double-click a note to edit it.
- Underline
- Draw along a line and the underline snaps to the line's baseline. Tap a line to underline all of it.
- Word highlight
- Tap a word to highlight it; tap it again to clear the highlight.
- Spotlight
- A glowing pointer that follows your cursor or finger without marking the page. Useful when sharing your screen.
Draw and shapes
The pencil button opens a panel with the drawing tools:
- Pen
- Free drawing.
- Vanishing pen
- Ink that fades away by itself about three seconds after you draw it. Point something out without leaving a mark.
- Highlighter
- A see-through wash over the text.
- Colours
- Pick a colour, choose a custom colour, or reuse a recent one.
- Line width
- Four thicknesses.
- Shapes
- Circle (drag from the centre), ellipse (drag a box), rectangle, rounded box and triangle.
- Lines
- Line, arrow and double arrow. Hold Shift to snap to 45°.
Stamps
The tick button opens the stamps. Choose one, choose a size (four sizes), then tap the page to place it.
- Marking
- Correct · Incorrect · Star · Unclear · Attention
- Arabic
- ممتاز — Excellent · أحسنت — Well done · أعد — Repeat · راجع — Revise
- Tajweed
- غنة — Ghunnah · قلقلة — Qalqalah · تفخيم — Tafkheem
The Tajweed stamps are always drawn in the colour that rule has on the page, so the stamp and the colour key always agree.
Eraser
Select the eraser, then press it again for its options:
- Rub
- Rubs out only the part of a stroke you touch, like a real eraser.
- Stroke
- Removes any stroke you touch, whole.
- Object
- Removes whole marks such as stamps, shapes and notes, and never nibbles ink.
- Size
- The size of the eraser tip.
- Highlighter only
- Rubs out a highlighter wash without disturbing notes written over it.
The eraser is the way to correct a mark: marks cannot be selected and moved.
Magnifier and display size
- Magnifier
- Turn it on and a lens follows your pointer, showing the word underneath enlarged with its Tajweed colours. Scroll the mouse wheel to zoom from 1.5× up to 8×, as far as your screen allows. Press → or ← to show one more word before or after it on the same line.
- Display size
- Make the page smaller or larger, from 70% to 150%, with the slider, the − and + buttons, or the 70, 100, 125 and 150 presets.

How marks are saved
Marks are saved in your browser on this device, page by page and separately for each Mushaf. Vanishing-pen ink is never kept. If the browser's storage is full, a warning button appears in the toolbar and new marks are not saved until you clear some pages.
Next: the Settings guide, or open the 16-line Quran and try the tools.
